Hey all,

lately I've been going through one of those periods where nothing I draw looks as good as something I drew before.

THe basic probem is that I use too many refs when I draw, I take bits and pieces I see, remember them and draw, so all my drawings change style from time to time.

So I was thinking of trying to let go of other peoples work and try to create my own style.

This is the first digital work I've done in this 'new' style :

A quick sketch over from a drawing I have on paper + some sloppy colours

Image

She turned out as somekind of non-faerie magical girl thingie

Now, in colouring thiis I noticed the eyes lack white, they look to 'orby' /magical to me, whih is nice for magical creatures, but not always

( *babbling, sorry* )

So, to me these kind of eyes would be great for cell shaded, or non shaded works, problem is I love working on eyes, adding all those shades and stuff + I love the eye designs.

I'll post some of the sketches I have on paper after I scan them tomorrow or later this week.

I'd love to hear (read) what you guys think so far :)

My friend, the style is something that will develop from lots of work later in an artist's career, don't waits time searching to a unique style first, because it is not the most important thing.

Try not to use the photographic images but draw and paint from life, because If an artist uses image reference, then artist's progress halts to a crawl.
Drawing from life develops artist's eye, the hand, the vision, the form, the composition, and atmosphere, and light all at the same time. A flat photo, not only is distorted and proportionally deformed, but shows only lines and composition.

Also, a friendly suggestion, paint more still-lifes with watercolor or acrylic, because it is cheaper than oil. After many still life paintings you will memorize how the light works in different habitats, and will be able to paint any image perfectly from your imagination, not using the refrence.

Hope this was helpful.

Best.

Hey guys, I'd really appreciate some imput here, for a class assignment I have to make an illustrator tutorial, I optioned to explain how to make a cell-shaded illustration, but I'm having some trouble translating the original lines into flat colours; the anatomy isn't quite 100% either, but because of being sick for two weeks I don't have time to redo the sketch and begin from scratch (again)

initial sketch
Image

lines (decided to drop the wings and do the background differently; like a coloured shape with whitespace around the character)
Image

shading (light comming from her back, lower right)
Image

vector flats
Image

so far I've only shaded the face, might be adding a second shade and highlight after I'm done shading the body, I'm doing this without lines, just flat colours

any tips/drawovers/critiques are highly appreciated, since I've been having issues with this over this for two weeks now

...thinking I might just trace this one instead, not enough time to finish realistic shadows

Yah I'd go with something simpler, plus I like this dood WAY more haha, he's totally fun, and has an interesting style.

He's looking solid man, but on the nit-pick front I'd watch his left (our right) foot. It seems to be turned just as much as his other, but the toe is higher up, it's just throwing the perspective off a bit.

Something that you should address though are his hands. Right now the whole character is looking really solid, and the hands are just bringing down the overall quality a bit. I cant totally describe it but I'll shoot yah a draw-over tomorrow when I get to work (hate doing it with a mouse.)

Cool piece man, to be honest, one of my favorites from yah, just has so much character and confidence, great job man!

thanks man, I was going to trace the hands from another sketch (think I posted it in the sketch thread)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ ... stures.jpg

I ended up starting over from scratch (bad idea, didn't get an extended deadline for being sick)

this was the final result;

had planned on adding highlights, but ran out of time

this one is definitely looking much better, the relaxed and natural
pose help its a lot, but the only thing i can really nit pick on this is
her shoulders and her left (our right) fore arm

try and smooth out the transition from shoulder to neck a bit and
for the fore arm the thickness of it is throwing it off

-- ah also where the arms enter the sleeves, your pinching the
arms and they aren't lining up

Damn, I totally missed this post;
do you remember what stuff you were talking about?
I remember sending you this (still) unfinished samurai/dog mask over MSN, was that it?

Something I'm working on:
I'm doing a limited run of screenprinted shirts, it's based on the three wise monkeys (see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil)

Image

I probably won't be doing the black shirt, since I don't think we've got plastisol inks to print lighter colours on darker fabrics.

been kinda busy and totally stressed out because of work for college and internship, managed to crack out a few ideas for the jam.
But nothing I'm really loving. Since it's due tonight and I can't fix all the errors and finish it by tonight I thought I'd just share what I got.
Need to go in and fix some linework and the shading.

Any tips are more than welcome, I didn't get it right in time, but I had a balst doing all the concepts.
I'll drop those in the quick sketch thread maybe.
I'll see if I can fix this during (but probably after) my internship.

Image

Been ages since I did any digital drawings (not counting tight illustration), takes some getting used to after working primarily with markers
