Hey all,
lately I've been going through one of those periods where nothing I draw looks as good as something I drew before.
THe basic probem is that I use too many refs when I draw, I take bits and pieces I see, remember them and draw, so all my drawings change style from time to time.
So I was thinking of trying to let go of other peoples work and try to create my own style.
This is the first digital work I've done in this 'new' style :
A quick sketch over from a drawing I have on paper + some sloppy colours

She turned out as somekind of non-faerie magical girl thingie
Now, in colouring thiis I noticed the eyes lack white, they look to 'orby' /magical to me, whih is nice for magical creatures, but not always
( *babbling, sorry* )
So, to me these kind of eyes would be great for cell shaded, or non shaded works, problem is I love working on eyes, adding all those shades and stuff + I love the eye designs.
I'll post some of the sketches I have on paper after I scan them tomorrow or later this week.
I'd love to hear (read) what you guys think so far :)
My friend, the style is something that will develop from lots of work later in an artist's career, don't waits time searching to a unique style first, because it is not the most important thing.
Try not to use the photographic images but draw and paint from life, because If an artist uses image reference, then artist's progress halts to a crawl.
Drawing from life develops artist's eye, the hand, the vision, the form, the composition, and atmosphere, and light all at the same time. A flat photo, not only is distorted and proportionally deformed, but shows only lines and composition.
Also, a friendly suggestion, paint more still-lifes with watercolor or acrylic, because it is cheaper than oil. After many still life paintings you will memorize how the light works in different habitats, and will be able to paint any image perfectly from your imagination, not using the refrence.
Hope this was helpful.
Best.
