part of me wants to try that :D...despite the fact that I dont know how to pull that off in PS7...oooh the challenge

YOU are CORRECT ion....my mechanical design is built upon my constant doodlings of self made gundam variations and gundam infulenced designs....a taint I wish I could purge at times...but in this case it worked in well rather nicely...

ewww, please no photoshop special effects... I say paint it traditionally! make sure you print it our very large (or tile a bunch of cropped pieces) and then go at it.

Photoshop special effects can look bombastic, if used correctly.

I'd say thats more of a devastator funk rather than a funky love bot. Either way it kicks ass, the gun especially. Your losing a bit of volume on the closest foot by making it looking right at us, turn it to the right a bit and you're gold.

Pya: thats also a justifiable notion.....: D
Shane: I'm usually with you on the horrors of "effects".....but giving the piece a shallow depth of field would be interestin....probably
Moo: heh heh..... thanks for the suggestion....

a thirty min or so mecha design built around the assault marine jump pack....(I like to build mechs around certain weapons and objects sometimes...its fun :D)

Image

for this weeks jam....Chairman fellow

Image

and the updated Devastator funk sketchum.....now with cowerin soldier dudes who feel out of perspective but yet serve their purpose of filling that awfully large blank space....

first pic-turrrr: AHHH, ONLY 30 MINUTESDA>SLD???? god, i swear... you crazy kids and your wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am speed. the lines and forms you constructed for this, they really keep the eye moving. something about the way that you've put curvey, almost organic shapes does WONDERS for the "movement" and, for a mecha of all things, it isn't stiff looking at all.
... i actually want to buy this sketch off of you...
the only see, and i like... JUST caught this, is that the jet pack/airvents/hellifiknowwhatthehelltheseare on the top are a little off perspective-wise. the boarder/rim/whatever on one is larger than the other.
haha, and i don't know if it was intentional... but it look like you made the left (our left) half roundy whereas you line-i-fyed the right. there are clues (like the sketchy lines) that this could be due to the left half not being as finished as the latter. try playing with more natural, rounder shapes when you compose your mechs. the flow is super nice.

second: haha, i love his face and the movement on the upper body is SUPER. it just seems as though that you could have done something more dynamic with the leggypoos. try curling the lpwer part of the leg closest to us under his thigh to give the impression he's jumping, perhaps? oh oh, and if you do that, redraw the other food aproppriately. it's all good though. jeebus, you have no idea how happy i am over this comfort zone break. great job (domorethingslikethis)

third: d'aww, po' lil' soilder guy... about to be totally pwned in the ass with huge saber sword-fingers. nice design on that broken heart with the skulls- neat little add-on. other than some minor perspetive thangs, this is great.
weeee

dude i dunno, these rule like hell man, way way better then the lastt time i checked this thread. your perspective and rendering skills have improved a lot. i think you should start workign on your values/shading now, because taht would help to make your work look less cluttered. not that it's that cluttered right now, it's just that it's so detailed that i don't know what to look at. it's really cool though.

aarg, this stuff is awesome, post more often! haha

and as a moment of oddness...I thought it be interestin to put up a scan of the "kahmal bot" at the earlier stages of the sketch as to maybe show some insight to my madness....(i might be CrAzY)

Boog i am really impressed with your improvement since you first got here. I like how you are branching out in some of your poses and your mech stuff is getting really dialed in. You should start drawing some of your characters into some action shots. I think you have a good grasp on designing your characters, and would love to see them put into some context.

Heck yeah!! Boog, If I recalled I joined alittle bit after you, and look at you now, wham!! All good and stuff, I really love the mechs. I was wondering is this all done by pencil, because it's very clean or did you redo the outline in photoshop or something. Well keep posting because it's hawt. You a good inspiration, and is a well good example of: If we put our mind on something, we can do anything.

okay...taking mouse's suggestion in mind...I decided to do some panels....something I havent done in a spell of about 2 months...

so I totally flew by the seat of my pants on this one (that is why its heavy on the raw side) so any help to strengthen the flow of the panels and the compositon of the panels themselves would be helpful...

expect a page two or something in a couple of days...

Im honestly totally lost as to what's going on except that it involves a colloseum and some gladiator of some sort. When you're working on a story, it really has to sell itself without words, and you gota make it as dumb proof as possible for the viewer (no matter how much you wanna oush it)

So when starting out, try not to move your camera from worms to birds eye so much, different angles, it just becomes a mess, and it becomes confusing as to who the focus is on, when, and why.

Each time you're working on a panel, think, "Why is this here? What's it's purpose?" and if you cant answer it right away, toss it.

That newer piece that's inked is rocking man, jsut noticed it, PROPS

Exactly Moo....since I dont work with text and all that intelligent stuff...

Establishing the opener is the problem for me.......since I dont really have a set storyline...

but thanks....Moo...I now realize I need to drag this whole "opening moment" out further than six panels

Mechasketchin doubleshots

as far as the first one is concerned....those arms were and are still being pain in the asses....but for the sake of a mech with puffed and slashed arms...

Image

The next one however....if you understand what I mean by "U/G" you can sorta think what kind of flavor I am trying to imbue with this one (ten points to you card junkies)...and by the way...those are vines....:D

Image

enjoy!

niiiice, boog, love the change up in form style!

unicorn guy (DON"T DENY IT!!) seems to have his horn angled too far to his right, bring it towards us a bit. his left hand seems too tilted to his left and up, bring it down like you did the other hand or just angle the said grabby mechanism towards his center. nice job on this design; i'm totally digging the puffy sleeves.

vine dude is looking pretty darn awesome. YOU MUST INK!

so....the excuse is that I was distracted.....

methinks I'll try to render this one without the aid of me penning it.....after I fix things up on it....

Oh i missed the designs from before, very nice, ROCOCO FASHION <3

New one: This is looking really great. Some proportion issues though. The hand is too big and arm to long, I moved it up. Actually I may have made it too short, something still doesn't look right.
The cropping is too tight, I opened it a bit at the bottom and top left.
The foot on the right needs more balance, so I turned it out (don't re draw it like that though- if you even choose to, its just a stump form to show position).
I also gave a little more form to his leg. More mass to the flexed arm as well.
I didn't change this, but it can be: feet need to be a little bigger and the head feels a little small, even for a skull with no skin and hair mass.

Image

Lovely work boogy. I just realized.. you draw these on the computer? x_x

I see a light pencil line but not an ink of it. Did you forget to finish the bottom of the spear gun tazor thing?
How hes holding it relaxed like needs to be resting on the ground.
Nice inking job. I could see more blacks filled in. Like his grate mouth piece, and some symbols like on his hips- the lightning bolts.

*also wishes he had a big fluffy feather ontop the head, hehe*

Cone: yeah....I see the bottom of it there..I will correct it....but I've got to get around to it first...(and no...that would defy its flavor...in my opinion)

so yeah....lets kick this update off with a start on the corrections to the fuzzywolf sketch...still tweakin but enacted most of what Cone pointed out.

....gotta erase that paper shadow D:

character design that I plan to use with something I got brewin in my head....a dementia summoner of sorts...

however....this draft puts him taller than what I wanted him to be by about two heads...so this most likely wont get finshed past a pencil render :D..

Ok, more of a general crit, but everything you do seems to hold the same proportions. Go for a huge fat ass robot, or somethign more abstract and not so humanoid.

That is all, for now, push yourself

i really like the roughs at the end, the sketches, they have great form to em.

you seem to really love the dynamic standing pose. you know, slightly leaning to one side, legs fairly wide, knee's bent, twist in the waist looking back, 'i am a human adonis' type of stance. i'd like to see more variety, some sitting, lying down, hunched over, getting up, flying through the air, twisting, just more life and a larger number of different stances, i think you'd get a lot out of it too. also different camera perspectives, worms eye, birds eye, harder foreshortening. more spice of life :P nearly all of your images of characters on this page except for the really loose ones are all looking backwards over their shoulders.

i totally agree with lys. shake things up with some different poses~
these new little mecha creatures are super fun. the floating joint one is mega awesome. ; _ ; i want to see more of him.
keep playing with these different body styles because this variation is not only very welcome but it looks cool too!!!
the eyes on your human are a little too "anime" in that they are rather large and do not conform a normal shap of an eye.
lovely job, boog.
