My favourite in this thread is the first image, with the turtle ... the colours are so dreamy. :)
Nicely rendered too, it looks crisp and soft at the same time.

Do you only draw digitally? Looking through this thread, I half feel like I'm being fooled by shiny paintings and pretty colours, when maybe the structure is a little lacking. I'd love to see something like ... pencil drawn. With clear perspective. Perspective is the anatomy for environmental artists!

I thought I posted something before. I must be going crazy again. Anyway, to answer your question, it's called magic.

Seriously though, as much as I love these studies, I'd kill to see you polish this stuff up.

If you are bored of looking at them or something, I'd like to give a crack at finishing these up if possible:

It'll give me something new to try aside from a few other things I have on the side after we wrap up the work on SatelliteSoda book. Think of them as impromptu collabs, haha! Let me know man.

Mara: Thanks! The turtle pic is definitely one of my better, more finished pieces.
Anyone want to see a hi-res version of it?

I definitely don't just do digital, but it is my stronger work. I'll post up some
sketchbook stuff one of these days.

Spyder: Sounds cool! It'll be interesting to see what you can bring to them.

TM0, ID love high-res versions of all of these haha.

With the quick environmental stuff, the really loose stuff, how long do you spend on those typically? Do you have a cut-off time or a "it get's the idea across" cut-off?

Hey guys, been super busy recently so all I've got is something from a
while back that you might enjoy.

My entry for an Alice in Wonderland competition, more dark and less whimsical
was never going to win I guess!

Hey guys, just a new speedie here.

Tell me what you think, I feel like it needs a tweaking before
I start refining it.

hey toby - its lookin pretty good so far.

2 quick thoughts are that the river seems to be jumping forward, try knocking it back somehow. The 2nd thing is that the foreground could probably stand to be leveld out a bit more (which is to say i feel its too mid toned, you could make the lights lighter and the darks darker to really help it stand out in the foreground). Theoretically that'd also knock back the river as well anyways.

In any case its good to see you trying to push things further than just speed paints :P keep us posted!

I really like the haziness going on here. Though yeah, I think you can push the contrast a bit further on the foreground but I think that's somewhat subjective considering the haziness going on. Now finish. :]

Cheers guys! I took your advice on board and here's an amended version.

By all means, rip into it  I could probably finish it in the next sitting
with a bit of advice.

A bit of a dig at Roger Dean's style (because deep down I'm a prog rock geek!)

Something a lil' different, more the idea than anything.

the layout with the chick you just posted is sick man. Really like how it developed. I think for your other two, you could push the poses of the characters a little more, adding a little more movement. Some good reading about this are the Walt Stanchfield Drawn to Life books (he was a life drawing instructor at Disney) which collect all his handouts from his teaching.

Good stuff though bro!

Cheers bigmac! Also thanks for the reading recommendation, I'll track it down.

In the meantime here's what I may call the finished version (If any of you folks want
to have a say on it you're welcome though)

And here's a super-rough little something that i may use as the basis for
something else, let me know what you think.

Oh, and as a little footnote I just finished my Illustration degree today! I thought
I'd share that out of excitement more than anything

Congrats on finishing your degree! Where did you study?

I really like how that "girl looking out over river" piece came out, I think it was a good choice to push it in the colour contrast like you did, that purple makes the whole image warm and atmospheric.

I think the new rough looks nice in colours and such, but maybe it's lacking a little drama? We're very close to the houses most nearby, yet they come off as being a little small. Maybe it's something with perspective, or cropping, or that the focal point is a little too dead-centre. I'm not sure what it is, but I'm missing some "oomph!" Sorry about this clueless advice, maybe somebody else can elaborate on that. :oopsbf:

Thanks Mara, I studied at Lincoln University (which no one has heard of, but it's
nice there!) You're quite right about the speedie lacking something, but I was mostly
going for colour more than anything (which you picked up on anyway)

And now an announcement:

I do too do stuff that isn't digital!

It's taken me a while to get round to it but here's a bunch of pages
from one of my sketch books.

Mostly fairly mindless, un-polished stuff so don't take it too seriously but do
tell me what you think:

yes! I love to see sketch books, and this stuff is totally stylish!
I can see some of that crazy multi-colour painting style in this, especially in the fourth one from the top (my favourite of this bunch) that you have in your digital work, only it seems even more expressive to me in your traditional. The mixing of patterns and painting and drawing is fresh ... overall, it all seems a lot more "out there" than anything digital you've shown so far. It'd be really cool to see you bring that into your finished digital work!

Lincoln? Nope, never heard of it, googled it - UK, huh! Cool, I'm thinking about applying to england and maybe scottland next year, so if it's something you can recommend then I'll definitely look into it more.

Hello again sodapeople!

Too much real life and not if enough time for art is a real pain right now.

Here's something older that I'm not sure why I never posted here
before...

Image

...and something new too! This one is a speedpaint that got out of hand and
turned into a something wholely inspired by the whole urban fantasy kind of
setting (I've been replaying Planescape: Torment so it's kinda on my mind!)

Image

Rip this one apart guys! I think this one needs a fresh set of eyes on it
before I put more time into it.

It's awesome you're trying to work on the human for man... but seriously, ditch the rendering and coloring and just dive into some line work. It helps you get out of your comfort zone and truly see what you need to work on more. Drill away at that stuff for a bit, and when you come back to rendering with color it's gonna freaking shine man.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

joe x4: thanks, I'd like to know what you think of the new version and whether
just moving that errant character is enough!

Igo: ooh! Very much taken on board, I'm getting into the habit of just doing line
sketches on small bits of paper. I'll be sure to spam this thread with the whole lot
once I have a whole load of them.

The latest:

A bit of ABC Warriors fanart to satisfy my geeky urges, rip into the lines so I can
get this sucker coloured up!

Image

The latest version of the street pic, I feel like this one could be really nice with
a bit more touching up and some additional elements

Til next time guys!

im LOVING that yellow piece. the crooked perspective and everything. its just beautiful man.

as for the bot, i think the black lines had much more UMPH! to em before you threw the colors in. you really could of just refined those lines and put much more tiny details and i would call it done. some things dont need to be colored.

and on the colored version of the bot dude, the colors are lookin a little dull, throw some more contrast in there.. make that back lighting super intense. it seems like youre just staying in the safe zone with it, yah know?

good stuff though man. shits really lookin good.

Nice observation ZombieZach, I guess I'm not giving my linework its dues! I think I'll take a shot at finishing it
both ways and see how it turns out.

Here's the latest iteration of the street scene with the colour pushed in a different direction, though
it is perhaps a little too different:

and a quickie I just this moment finished:

youre seriously extremely good at digital painting man. that quickie is sick,

in the street scene, im thinkin you maybe pushed the green a little too far. maybe pull that back a tiny bit in to the yellow? i dunno, this could just be me nit picking.

i kinda like it though, its pretty wild lookin.

Thanks for the feedback.

Pirateken: A fair bit of intuition and LOTS of trial and error! Sometimes I'll even desaturate the
whole thing and start the colour from scratch if it annoys me enough!

Ovad: Start off with pencil and learn to construct everyday scenes and concentrate on
really nailing perspective, it's the most important thing in backgrounds!

If you want some examples I've actually started a livestream channel and I'm gonna
keep updating it with new stuff, drop by and see if you can pick up anything from seeing
my process :smilebf:

That looks pretty cool man. Only thing throwing me off is how the body seems skewed and leaning to the left. Other than that it looks like a good start to whatever else you plan on doing with it.

I dig the skew, adds to the creep-factor. Totally loving that piece man.

Gota be honest, the work that's "less refined" seems to have more charm and life to it. I have a similar problem a lot of times where I try to tighten something up and it loses something. Dont feel the need to always tighten things up, sometimes the initial rough is the best result. So dont ever save over your initial rough stuff man, keep those around.

I totally encourage you to continue to refine your work though... even if the piece doesnt come out quite the way you want, it's imperative to exercise that and to keep doing it. If anything I think it'll help your rough stuff out. You ever try to matte-paint where you're working with actual photographs? I highly recommend it for you, I think it could help push your background stuff into that "finished" stage you're working towards.

Cheers for the feedback guys. I totally intended for it to be as skewed as it is!

You're totally right Igo, I lose impetus the more refining and tweaking I have to do.
I guess I like starting things more than finishing them (the obvious solution being get
kickass at starting!)

Here's the latest iteration of the last one, I have an inkling that something's missing
so if you spot it before me let me know!
